28.09.2018 Dioxins, Furans and PCBs: Permanently stable - not always an advantage - 20 years of biomonitoring in Bavariauba

Dioxins, furans and PCBs are hard-to-decompose organic pollutants that accumulate in the environment and reach the animal and human beings through the food chain. To assess the accumulation of these substances from the air, the bioindicators spruce needles, grass and kale are used. This can be used to estimate harmful effects on our ecosystem and on plant-based foods and foods. The long-term series of measurements show a general decrease of the values ??in the observed period at all locations in Bavaria. Today, however, PCB inputs have settled at a low but steady level.

20.08.2018 Association of Maternal Insecticide Levels With Autism in Offspring From a National Birth Cohortuba

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with a largely unknown etiology. To date, few studies have investigated prenatal exposure to toxins and risk of autism by using maternal biomarkers of exposure. Persistent organic pollutants are lipophilic halogenated organic compounds and include the insecticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), as well as its metabolite p,p'-dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The objective of this study was to test whether elevated maternal levels of persistent organic pollutants are associated with autism among offspring.

18.04.2018 Environmental and food contamination with polychlorinated biphenyls and selected POPsuba

The paper deals with the sources and pathways of environmental and livestock/food contamination by polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as well as selected substitutes to PCBs. The main PCDD/F and PCB exposure sources in the environment including sinks and reservoirs are named. Current perceptions on causal relationships between the basic load of environmental compartments and (bio) magnification in the food chain are based on the results of research projects of the Federal Environment Agency over the last five years.

18.04.2018 Chemicals in consumer articles - App Scan4Chem simplifies information rightuba

Since entry into force of the EU chemicals regulation REACH consumers are entitled to request and receive information on so-called substances of very high concern in consumer articles directly from the suppliers. To this end they have to send a respective request to the manufacturer or retailer. The app Scan4Chem simplifies this request: after scanning the barcode of an article an automatically generated request can be sent to the barcode owner by click. The barcode owner has to answer to the request if substances of very high concern are contained in his article. The German Environment Agency recommends intensive use of the information right, because in so doing it is demonstrated to business and industry that substances of very high concern in consumer articles are not accepted by the public.

31.01.2018 Saxony-Anhalt: Increased PCB and PCN values along the Ehle uba

In the Ehle and in the bottom of the bank dangerous chemical substances were found for humans. It was found that in the sediments of the Ehle and on the ground of the bank of the Ehle are the substances PCB and PCN. These chemicals were previously used in, for example, transformers, capacitors, hydraulic systems and wood preservatives. They are hazardous to health and therefore prohibited today. The State Institute for the Relief of Contaminated Sites in Saxony-Anhalt is taking first steps to limit the damage to the population.

23.08.2017 Evaluation of Monitoring Data for POPs - UBA Text publisheduba

Persistent organic substances, also called POPs, are ubiquitous in the environment. To identify stress situations in the environment as well as in the food sector, it is important to understand the causes and propagation pathways of these substances. The aim of the project is to develop a knowledge base for specific POPs and POP candidates, to research monitoring data and to describe the paths of propagation in detail. The project focuses on dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and selected PCB substitutes. These include short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD).

01.11.2016 New Study on "Endocrine Disruptors" uba

American and Swedish scientists have attempted to assess the impact of these "endocrine disrupters" on new type 2 diabetes for Europe. Diabetes and obesity could also be caused or favored by environmental pollution. There are more and more indications, that artificial chemicals that accumulate in the environment interfere with the production and regulation of the hormones of the human body. The study included more than 1000 70-75-year-olds from Uppsala, who measured exposure to plasticizers, pesticides (DDE), PCB 153 and perfluoro chemicals by means of blood samples. These occur in products such as textiles or cartons and transform into perfluorooctanoic acids in the body. The scientists tried to estimate how a disease can be reduced by eliminating the risk factor "endocrine disruptors" / chemicals. According to this study, fewer emollients, pesticides, PCBs and perfluorochemicals would prevent many diseases and reduce costs by billions annually across Europe.

The present final report presents the results. Samples of livers and partial meat from different wild animals from five differently polluted forest areas in Bavaria were examined. For the substance groups PCB and PCDD / F elevated levels were found in the liver samples in all investigated species. In contrast, for most of the endocrine-active substances analyzed sample values ??were measured below the respective determination or detection limit. Comparatively low levels were also found in the liver samples for low-fluorinated flame retardants. The complete final report is available here.

23.06.2016 EU Commission: Fishery products from the Baltic Seauba

In certain fish and certain fishery products from the Baltic Sea, the levels are regularly above the maximum. In order to ensure that only fish and fishery products are placed on the market, which comply with EU legislation, a list of fish from the Baltic Sea area, where infringements are likely to occur, has been developed. This list is based on the available data and must be updated regularly. For fish and fishery products from the Baltic Sea region, which can not be guaranteed on the basis of available data on the presence of the substances in question, specific risk management measures have been established to ensure that only fish and fishery products complying with EU legislation are placed on the market. Accordingly, analytical methods and standards (fish size, number, etc.) have been adapted in the European Commission Recommendation (EU) 2016/688 of 2 May 2016 on "Monitoring and control of the presence of dioxins and PCBs in fish and fishery products from the Baltic Sea Region".

10.05.2016 New data on the impact of environmental media in the Alpsuba

In the international research project MONARPOP (Monitoring Network in the Alpine Region for Persistent Organic Pollutants), experts from the Austrian Environmental Agency and external scientists are investigating the occurrence of POPs in the Alps. The main focus of the investigations was on dioxins, furans and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The results from the years 2005-2013 show that the long-lived, carcinogenic pollutants are transported over long distances in the air and the Alps serve as a barrier. The cold of high alpine areas ensures that the pollutants accumulate there and remain for a long time. One of the UBA's research projects involved the standardization of the analysis of PCB and PCDD / F in the matrices of sewage sludge, treated biowaste and soil. According to the predictions, this trend will return to the Arctic by DDT by the year 2075. This effect is additionally reinforced by climate change. PCBs, on the other hand, are unlikely to be able to flow back across the polar circle in the north, but the rate at which currents are weakening will decrease.
